PRINT MATERIALS

Printing is a process for re-production of texts and images, typically with ink on paper using a printing press. It is often carried out as a large-scale industrial process, and is an essential part of marketing, advertising and publishing.

What types of printing processes are available today?

  • Offset Lithography:  most commonly used commercial printing process for the bulk of desktop publishing on paper including publications, business stationary, catalogs, posters, mailers and other marketing materials
  • Flexography: frequently used for printing on plastic, foil, acetate film, brown paper, and other materials used in packaging
  • Gravure Printing: commonly used for labels and packaging, competing against flexography
  • Laser/Digital Printing: speed and lower operation costs make laser printing attractive to many businesses especially for low run counts
  • Thermography: often used in place of the more expensive engraving process to produce wedding invitations, business cards, and letterhead with raised printing
  • Stochastic: used for fine art prints
  • Letterpress: nearly obsolete; however, still occasionally used for newspapers, books, limited edition prints, business stationary, posters, and some forms
  • Engraving:  nearly lost art form; nevertheless, can sometimes be found in fine letterhead and invitations
  • Screen Printing:  popular for t-shirts, but works for many other non-textile projects as well such as CDs, vehicle billboards, signs, and poster

Gentry Smith Design is
rooted in traditional print design techniques.  While we are aware that digital media demands are at an all time high, we are experiencing a similar trend in printed materials.  As newer technology continues to become available, in the foreseeable future, there will continue to be a strong need for traditional channels of marketing, advertising and publishing.  The most successful campaigns are often a mixed combination of interactive multi-media and printed promotional materials working seamlessly together.
